Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) has become an increasingly common treatment for men experiencing symptoms of low testosterone. While TRT offers benefits such as improved energy, mood, and sexual function, it’s essential to understand the potential risks associated with this therapy.

New Insights from JAMA Internal Medicine

A recent study published in JAMA Internal Medicine titled “Association of Testosterone Therapy With Risk of Venous Thromboembolism Among Men With and Without Hypogonadism” sheds light on the relationship between TRT and the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE), which includes conditions like deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism.

The study analyzed data from 39,622 men, both with and without hypogonadism, who experienced a VTE event. The researchers found that testosterone therapy was associated with an increased short-term risk of VTE in both groups. Specifically, the odds of developing VTE were approximately doubled within the first six months of starting TRT. The risk appeared to be more pronounced in men under 65 years of age.JAMA Network+1vegasvascular.com+1

Implications for RochesterTRT Patients

Patient safety is our first concern at RochesterTRT. The significance of careful assessment and monitoring while contemplating or receiving TRT is highlighted by this study.

For individuals who have been diagnosed with hypogonadism:

  • TRT is still an effective therapeutic option, but it’s important to evaluate each patient’s unique risk factors for VTE.
  • To reduce any dangers, hematocrit levels and other risk factors must be regularly monitored.
For individuals who do not have hypogonadism:
  • The study emphasizes the importance of exercising caution when recommending TRT to people for whom there is no obvious medical reason.

Before starting TRT, other therapies or lifestyle changes should be taken into account.

Our Commitment

Evidence-based care is a priority for RochesterTRT. To ascertain whether TRT is appropriate, we make sure every patient has a thorough assessment. Regular monitoring is part of our procedures to identify and quickly treat any negative impacts.

While TRT can offer significant benefits for men with low testosterone levels, it’s essential to be aware of and manage potential risks. The recent findings from JAMA Internal Medicine emphasize the importance of individualized care and vigilant monitoring. Patients are encouraged to discuss any concerns with their healthcare providers to make informed decisions about their treatment options. Contact us today if you are interested in starting TRT!
